Lesson Plan

Grade: 3rd
Subject: Science

Standards:
The student understands the interaction and organization in the Solar System and the universe and how this affects life on Earth. (SC.E.1.2)
The student understands the consequences of using limited natural resources. (SC.G.2.2)
The student understands that science, technology, and society are interwoven and interdependent. (SC.H.3.2)

Learning Objectives:
Apply strategies of a skillful listener and test by administering a pop quiz
Identify conditions that result in specific weather phenomena, including thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hurricanes by keeping a daily journal of weather in their local area
Describe Earth’s layers, including inner and outer cores, mantle, and crust
Describe ways to sustain natural resources, including recycling, reusing, conserving, and protecting the environment.

Describe various forms of technology used in observing Earth and its moon

Bloom's taxonomy levels
Knowledge - List the 9 planets
synthesis - Creating a model of the planet they chose.
Analysis - Compare and contrast ones own planet to that of another students.

Media used:

Reserve laptop cart and/or computer lab for research
Internet

Using the internet students will choose one of the planets we discussed in class, find its size, and create a real life model using recycled materials.

Monday - I will give a brief introduction of the solar system and introduce the first two planets; Mercury and Venus

Tuesday - We will discuss Earth and specific weather conditions that make our planet unique.

Wednesday - We will discuss Mars as well as the giant planets Jupiter and Saturn

Thursday - The last three planets will be discussed; Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto

Friday - Talk about Recycling and how all living things must compete for Earth's limited resources. Assign model planet project, due Monday.

Evaluate and Revise.

How it went. What worked. What should be revised?
The Projects turned out great! The kids loved working on them and had a blast sharing them with the rest of the class. This lesson plan is one that I will certainly use again.
